Application of Epoxy-Asphalt Composite in Asphalt Paving Industry: A Review with Emphasis on Physicochemical Properties and Pavement Performances

One of the failure mechanisms associated with asphalt paving layers, especially on steel deck bridges, is large permanent deformation, which adversely affects its long-term performance in service. Thus, epoxy resin was introduced industry to tackle deformation mixtures due thermosetting nature. In this review, as a dominant component epoxy-asphalt composite system first considered, followed by discussion curing methods and mechanism. Furthermore, physicochemical property mechanical mixture were thoroughly examined. Crosslink density dictates viscosity thus allowable construction time. Phase separation dispersion particles matrix observed for composite, it showed superior elastic behavior resistance capability when compared conventional materials. exhibited significantly higher compressive strength, much better rutting resistance, durability water properties. However, low-temperature cracking slightly compromised.
